BLIZZARD

Flake by flake, it swirls

sweetly down onto the terrace,

a delicate skim that barely

turns the world to white.

But given time, the lace facade

becomes a sheet, then blanket,

then much more than trucks

or plows can manage.

In this sleepy southern city

there’s not salt or sand enough

to make the bridges safe,

the highway trucks soon aground

in the unfamiliar drifts.

Inside his hotel room, warm

with room service and cable,

he fluffs the pillows, stares
